Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania is famous for Hershey’s Chocolate, the invention of the Slinky, and as the birthplace of the Declaration of Independence. This is reflected in the state motto: “Virtue, Liberty, and Independence.” Known as the Keystone State due to its crucial geographic position among the original 13 colonies, Pennsylvania was founded by William Penn in 1681 and played a vital role in American history. As one of the 13 founding states of the United States, its influence is undeniable.

In 1965, Pennsylvania adopted the Great Dane as its official state dog, honoring William Penn’s loyal companion. An original portrait of Penn alongside his Great Dane still hangs in the reception area of the Governor’s Mansion. The state also has a strong agricultural presence, ranking as the nation’s largest producer of mushrooms, fourth-largest producer of eggs, and fifth-largest producer of milk.

Pennsylvania has been home to many influential figures. James Buchanan, the 15th President of the United States, was born in Cove Gap and preceded Abraham Lincoln in office. Other notable Pennsylvanians include frontiersman Daniel Boone, military leader General George C. Marshall, and a long list of entertainers and historical figures who have left their mark on American culture.

The state’s natural beauty is evident in its rich wildlife. The white-tailed deer, Pennsylvania’s state animal, is commonly found throughout the Appalachian Mountains. The ruffed grouse, designated as the state bird in 1931, is a frequent sight in the forests, while the brook trout thrives in the state’s many rivers and streams. On warm summer nights, fireflies—locally known as “lightning bugs”—illuminate the air, adding to the state’s charm.

With a population of over 12 million, Pennsylvania is the sixth most populous state and the ninth most densely populated. Sports play a significant role in its culture, with the Philadelphia Eagles and Pittsburgh Steelers having some of the most passionate fan bases in the country. Outdoor enthusiasts can explore 121 state parks, while tourists flock to destinations like Lancaster County, famous for its Amish heritage and vast outlet shopping centers. Visitors travel from all over to experience the unique “horse and buggy” culture and explore Pennsylvania’s rich history.

Whether you’re drawn to its historical significance, natural beauty, or vibrant cities, Pennsylvania offers something for everyone. From bustling urban centers to quiet countryside retreats, it remains a state that blends tradition with modern progress.
